Hopton Castle

Hopton Castle is nestled in the charming village of Hopton Heath, conveniently located in the same parish as Ashlea Pools Lodges — approximately halfway between Knighton and Craven Arms, in the picturesque county of Shropshire.

A fascinating site for history lovers, Hopton Castle was featured in the popular British TV series Time Team in 2010. Though it had stood as a ruin since the early 1700s, the castle underwent a careful restoration between 2006 and 2011. It was officially re-opened as a visitor attraction by the Duke of Gloucester in December 2011.

Best of all, Hopton Castle is just a four-minute drive from Ashlea Pools — or, for those who fancy stretching their legs, it’s a lovely walk directly from the park through the peaceful Shropshire countryside.

It’s an ideal outing for the whole family:

  • A perfect dog walk, with scenic trails and plenty of fresh air.

  • Children will love imagining battles of old, playing knights and dragons as they explore the castle grounds.

  • And for those who enjoy a slower pace, it’s a tranquil spot to soak up local history and enjoy a picnic surrounded by nature.

Whether you’re looking for a bit of heritage, a gentle ramble, or an imaginative adventure for the kids, Hopton Castle makes for a truly memorable day out — right on your doorstep.

Clun

Sometimes, it’s nice to slow down, keep things simple, and reconnect with a gentler pace of life — and Clun is just the place to do that.

Described by poet A.E. Housman in A Shropshire Lad as “the quietest place under the sun”, Clun is a peaceful little town that’s full of charm. With its quaint streets, historic bridge, and scenic river walks, it offers the perfect setting for rest and relaxation.

If you’re in search of a day out surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the Shropshire countryside, Clun will not disappoint. Wander through the village, explore the ruins of Clun Castle, or simply enjoy a quiet moment by the riverside — it’s a refreshing step back in time.

Best of all, it’s just a short 15-minute drive from Ashlea Pools, making it an easy and rewarding outing during your stay.

Ludlow

The medieval town of Ludlow is a true gem in the heart of Shropshire, renowned for its rich history, vibrant culture, and irresistible food scene. With Michelin-starred restaurants and an annual Ludlow Food Festival that draws visitors from far and wide, it’s no wonder Ludlow has earned the title of Britain’s gastro capital.

Best of all, it’s just 15 miles from Ashlea Pools — almost close enough to smell the delicious aromas drifting through the streets!

But even if food isn’t your main reason for visiting, Ludlow has so much more to offer. Stroll through its historic market square, explore the impressive Ludlow Castle, or take in the beauty of St Laurence’s Parish Church, one of the finest in the region. The town is brimming with charm, heritage, and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

Ludlow makes a perfect day out, whether you’re indulging in fine dining or soaking up some of Shropshire’s finest culture and scenery.

Long Mynd

Covering nearly 5,000 acres of heather-clad hills, the Long Mynd offers sweeping views across the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and into the Welsh hills beyond. It’s a place of great beauty and importance — rich in wildlife, geology, and archaeology — and it’s just under 30 minutes’ drive from Ashlea Pools. The journey itself is a treat, winding through some of the area’s most scenic countryside.

Whether you’re in the mood for a gentle stroll or something more energetic, there’s something for everyone — with dedicated paths for walking, cycling, and horse riding. For those who prefer a more leisurely day, you can even drive right up to the top to soak in the views.

In Carding Mill Valley, you’ll find excellent visitor facilities, including a tea room, shop, and car park. It’s a great spot to paddle in the stream, enjoy a picnic, or begin your ascent up the hill for a real outdoor adventure.

And when the day’s exploring is done, there’s no better way to unwind than in your very own private hot tub back at Ashlea Pools — the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Hopton Wood Cycling

Just a stone’s throw from Ashlea Pools, Hopton Woods Mountain Bike Base is a must-visit for biking enthusiasts. Tucked away in the beautiful Hopton Wood, it’s one of Shropshire’s top spots for mountain biking — and it’s practically on your doorstep.

As the name suggests, it’s all about the trails here — with a variety of routes to suit all levels, from scenic woodland rides to challenging downhill tracks for the more experienced rider. It’s a thrilling way to explore the great outdoors and get your adrenaline pumping.

So if biking’s your thing, grab your gear and head out for a proper day of adventure. Hopton Woods is the perfect place to ride, explore, and enjoy the rugged beauty of Shropshire — all before heading back to relax at Ashlea Pools.
